With a budget of 1.5billion francs, Kiziguro hospital is set to raise the funds to construct a fully-fledged state of the art hospital without waiting for funds from donors or the government.
For the past four year, the hospital’s management board has managed to start constructing a modern hospital from contribution of the church and the savings from the hospital income, to a level where eight structures out of the eleven proposed facilities hare now complete.
Kiziguro hospital was constructed in 1985, starting as a simple health centre serving the population in former Byumba province- now Gatsibo district. With time the population has increased and numbers of patients multiplied by eight times- totaling to over 300.000 residents in need of health care.
According to the Hospital Director Dr. Dioclès Twagiramungu, the numbers of residents on a daily basis has increased to 300 per day and these numbers call for immediate action, to improve health services.
“This is an aspect which compelled the administration to start the construction project for a facility that can offer better services. We couldn’t wait to have and see patients being congested in the hospital,” Twagiramungu said.
Twagiramungu says that the secret behind achieving this goal was to cut on their expenses and increase on the savings from the hospital income each year.
“We decided to start the construction work stage by stage through savings amounting to about Rwf120 million each year. So far we are doing well and for the past four years, we manage to raise a structure, each year” he said.
Some of the residents in the area say that the move has come at the right time and they are anxious to have their community receive good health care services in better hospital structures.
“We have been patient with this situation, but at last our prayers will soon be answered, when we step in the new facilities” says Agnes Mukamana on of the out-patients.
Apparently, Dr.Twagiramungu revealed that the maternity ward will not be part of the main project, but will be considered in future, because of limitation of funds and the need to have better hospitalization wards to accommodate the in-patients.
