Karongi district has launched a programme to promote adolescent sexual reproductive health education in schools.
Addressing the media after at the launch of the training of 35 girls’ peer group leaders from different schools, Assoumpta Mukakarangwa, the coordinator of Karongi Youth Center, said girls need accurate and comprehensive education about sexuality, to practice healthy sexual behavior.
She said the awareness would check exploitative sexual activities that lead to health and social problems.
“Additionally, the issue of adolescent teenage pregnancies cannot be ignored and, therefore, it is very important that we target problems that address sexuality needs among Rwanda’s youth,” she adds.
Though this sensitization program started in Burega and Kirambo 9YBE schools, it will be done in all Basic Schools of Karongi district.

The campaign is being funded by Imbuto Foundation and Karongi Youth Center started sensitizing the coordinators of Girls’ Peer Groups in nine and 12 Year Basic Education schools on reproductive health to help young girls.
